## About

Repair Me Yourself is a free appliance age calculator for homeowners. Enter a serial number or purchase year and the tool shows the build date, current age, typical lifespan and how much life remains. It then runs a 50 percent repair test against the cost of a new appliance to help you decide whether fixing it makes sense.

The calculator decodes serial numbers for GE, Monogram, Bosch and LG air conditioners using date rules published by those manufacturers. For other brands without published rules, you enter the year manually. It covers 12 appliance types with typical lifespans based on data from the National Association of Home Builders.

No sign-up is required. The repair test compares your quote against replacement cost using a rule from Consumer Reports that suggests repairs should not exceed 50 percent of a new unit's price.

Problem
Homeowners often pay for repairs on appliances near the end of their life, wasting money when replacement would be better value.

Solution
The calculator shows appliance age and remaining lifespan, then tests whether a repair quote is worth it against the cost of a new unit.
