About
Hushbox is a file encryption tool for Mac that lets you lock any file or folder in place using Touch ID or a password. Right-click a file or folder in Finder, choose Lock with Hushbox, and it becomes encrypted as an AES-256 disk image. The locked item stays in its original location but its contents disappear from Spotlight, Recents and file previews until you unlock it.
Unlocking is a double-click followed by Touch ID or your Hushbox password. Locked files open in a private encrypted space that Spotlight never indexes, and nothing unencrypted sits on your disk. You can set Hushbox to lock automatically when your screen locks, your Mac sleeps, or after an idle time you choose. If an app has unsaved work, Hushbox asks before locking rather than force-closing it.
Everything runs on your Mac with no account, no cloud and no back door. If Hushbox ever disappears, you can still open your locked files by renaming them to end in .sparsebundle and entering your password, since they use macOS's own encryption format. The app works on macOS 13 or later on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
Hushbox locks files in place within Finder rather than moving them to a separate vault, so there's no window to open or files to drag. Locked items stay in their original folders but disappear from Spotlight, Recents and previews until you unlock them with Touch ID. The tool uses AES-256 encryption built on macOS's own disk image format, meaning your files remain accessible without Hushbox if needed. Locking happens automatically when your screen locks, your Mac sleeps, or after an idle time you set, though it won't force-close apps with unsaved work.
- Problem
- Files on your Mac can be accessed by anyone with physical access, and sensitive documents appear in Spotlight and recent files even when you want them hidden.
- Solution
- Hushbox encrypts files with Touch ID protection, hides them from Spotlight and previews, and automatically locks them when your Mac sleeps or the screen locks.
